Renaissance sponsors Nabs on Mount Vinson climb

Renaissance Services has signed up to sponsor Omani adventurer Nabil "Nabs" Al Busaidy in his 2010 expeditions which until now have been kept under wraps but promise to deliver another year of record setting achievements for Oman.

Nabs was recently honored by the Sultanate's Ministry of Sports for his successful 2009 expedition to become the first Arab and the first Omani to reach the magnetic North Pole. This year Nabs has set his mind to a more arduous and dangerous goal.

Nabs will be undergoing a series of extreme physical training In preparation of his risk-laden mission, including climbing Mount Vinson, one of the 7 summits of the world located where some people call "the bottom of the Earth" otherwise known as the Antarctic.

During the Antarctic's summer season, November through January, there is 24 hours of sunlight. While the average temperature during these months is -20°F, the intense sun will melt snow on dark objects. The effects of global warming on the Antarctic's rapidly melting ice have inspired Nabs to send environmental messages to Oman's public while on the 4,892 metres (16,050 ft) climb.

Only around 1,400 people have climbed Mount Vinson because of its remote location and Nabs is aiming to be the first Omani national to do so.

Nabil al Busaidy planted the Omani flag, at the highest point of snow, on the highest mountain, on the highest continent, in the coldest and driest place on earth, at 19:12 GMT on 17th January 2010, becoming the first Omani to summit Mount Vinson, one of the seven highest summits on the seven continents.
